Am I too old for dental implants?
At Southside Dental Implants in Brisbane we treat a range of different age groups from people in their mid-twenties and beyond.
It is astounding the number of times people of all ages, when presented with dental implants as a possible solution to their problem, ask us “Aren’t I too old for that?” or “I am way too old for dental implants”. Little do they know that the average implant patient is in their 60’s and 70’s and I even have some in their 90’s. People are living longer, retiring later, and many are living healthy, fulfilling lives well into their 90’s. I have a patient in her 90’s that waltzed on in to my practice the other day with a plate of fresh home-baked scones as a polite thank you for what we achieved for her!
Age not believed to be a barrier for a successful outcome when treating older patients with dental implants
At Southside Dental Implants we are always up to date with the science of dental implants. This is part of our passion and we pride ourselves in applying this to improve the quality of dental implant treatment to our patients in their prime years of their lives. Study after study tells us that age is no barrier to a successful outcome in regards to dental implant treatment in older individuals. Older patients are more likely to suffer from tooth loss or loose dentures and it is sad that they (or others) are denying themselves of dental implant treatment which the scientific literature also tells us does increase their quality of life.
Rather than age, the main factor in regards to not being suitable for a dental implant would be:
- Absence of certain medical conditions (eg uncontrolled diabetes, certain types of medication etc). Osteoporosis is NOT one of those conditions and individuals with osteoporosis can successfully receive dental implants
- Good oral hygiene
- Untreated/active gum disease
- Inadequate bone quantity or quality. This once again is not age dependent and modern implant dentistry utilises three-dimensional low dose x-ray imaging to determine this.
